Mermaid Colors – Tapping the Venetian Color Pool: Capturing the unique colors of a city floating on water in works of art  – the tools with which the Venetian artists, in particular painters, became famous: Canaletto (1697 – 1768), Tintoretto (1518 – 1594) Bellini (1430 – 1516), Tiepolo (1696 – 1770), Tiziano (1488 – 1576) and Veronese(1528 – 1588). In particular, the vedutista Tiepolo, representing the Venetian rococò period, used to fully tap the experience offered by the myriad of ever changing colors of the lagoon.

To my mind, it’s important to become aware of the Venetian color heritage – which is still the basis for so many works of art in town. This unique pool of colors all the artists, designers and artisans make use of … Here it is presented in my new rubrique Mermaid Colors – I Colori della Sirenetta – which you can follow on my blog A Garden in Venice, where the tools of the trade of artists and artisans will be presented, through the centuries. The first post will be on the colors used by Tiepolo.

By the way, did you know that Venetians, just looking at a certain picture of their town, are able to tell which season it represents :-)
